DISCLAIMER: The following comic story is a fan-made work and does not intend to infringe on the rights of the creators or copyright holders of Birds of Prey, Batman, or any other part of the DC Universe.
NO ONE involved with this story’s production owns these characters, as they are the property of DC, and Warner Bros. Discovery. We highly recommend you read and watch the original source materials, as they are wonderful and probably the reason you are here in the first place.
This story was written purely out of love for the 2002 Birds of Prey television series and is not profiting this story’s creators in any way other than fulfilling some very nerdy dreams.
Thank you, and enjoy.
Firefly fans don’t know how good they have it.
Sure, 2002 was rough. Anxiety from network uneasiness was ever-present for weeks, culminating in the inevitable cancellation and mourning period. Birds of Prey fans know it all too well, with their new favorite show premiering just three weeks after Firefly.
But since then, the Firefly fandom has known endless rewards, not only in the form of an honest-to-goodness feature film, but ongoing action figures, games (Yahtzee: Firefly Edition, anyone?), an upcoming animated series reboot/continuation, and, yes, comics.
Meanwhile, in New Gotham… well, aside from a brief but glorious cameo, the streets have been dead quiet since the series concluded its 13-episode run. But that means there is plenty of room for fan projects like this…
What would Birds of Prey have become after season 5?
How would the characters have evolved?
And where the hell was Batman?!
The following story is one fan’s best guess at how the series could have ended had it had a chance to grow. How, after a proper 100-episode run on television, the creators might have attempted to deliver on years of victories, losses, betrayals, and guarded secrets to, hopefully, leave fans satisfied.
A huge thank you to the artists who made this comic possible. Maicou Oliveira was a pleasure to work with over the years it took to bring this project together, and his inks never shied away from even my script’s most laborious needs. Mickaël Journou’s cover art brings me more joy than I can express, and I’m so honored he made the time to bring his skills and style to the piece. Nikki Powers’ lettering is as precise and professional as it comes. It’s embarrassing how good these three are at what they do. I’m so thankful to them all.
And now, without further ado, welcome back to New Gotham… enjoy your stay.
